The marching band season starts with band camp in mid-August and runs through early to mid-November. The Mount Pleasant Marching Band performs at football games and in The Michigan Competing Bands Association (MCBA) competitions around the state. In addition to the marching band, the unit features the color guard, a flag and rifle corps.
The Mount Pleasant Marching Band accepts all musicians, including guitarists and pianists. In addition to the marching performers, the marching band includes a non-marching percussion section, called the "pit.” These members play an assortment of rhythm instruments including the marimbas, xylophones, timapani, guitars and keyboards. Each year, the composition of the pit varies based on the music selected and student participation.
During Band Camp, students learn how to march and work on both the music and the drill (marching choreography) for the season's show. Drill and music are written based on those who attend and commit to marching band during spring training. In addition, the Instrumental Music Boosters fund a marching band staff to work with the different band sections to help the students perfect their marching and musical skills.
The Big Show
The marching show is written specifically for the Mount Pleasant Marching Band, based on the number of students and strengths and talents of students, creating a total show concept. The show is performed during halftime at home football games and during the fall competition season. While we encourage students to focus on the Mount Pleasant Marching Band, Mr. Taton does make allowances for participation in fall and spring sports.
Members of the Mount Pleasant Marching Band have marching uniforms assigned and fitted individually, each year. Each student must also purchase a band T-shirt. Dry cleaning fees for marching uniforms and concert attire is part of overall band fees. This cost is not covered by the school system.
To complete the uniform look, all band members are required to wear the same shoes and black gloves, which can be purchased during band camp. It is recommended that the full uniform, including shoes is kept together. Uniforms are kept at the school, students are not allowed to take them home. The black shoes may be used for all band concerts (Symphonic, Jazz, All-District, All-State).
The Instrumental Music Boosters handles the ordering of these shoes and gloves and the fitting of the uniforms.
